Michigan Lighthouse Project
Optimizing for Google Cloud to Support COVID-19 Data Reporting & Decision Making
Challenge
A Need for rapid deployment support
Michigan needed to rapidly enhance, deploy, and support a web application & infrastructure to track and analyze large COVID-19 infection datasets, enabling government officials to effectively deploy resources and minimize the impact of outbreaks.
Solution
Optimizing for Google Cloud to Support COVID-19 Data Reporting & Decision Making
Migrated the database, infra, & data to Google Cloud to scale and enable tracking for millions of cases across the entire population of Michigan. Optimized database queries, API’s, and application code to improve performance and achieve results faster. Improved Site & Cloud Infrastructure for Scalability & Security Securely managed very large volumes of sensitive COVID-19 data through REST API Endpoints, with granular access controls in Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL database. Designed load tests & tuned app and infra to ensure system scaled to meet surging client demands.
Results
Fast and Deep Insights
Supported Michigan's Governor and state/local public health officials by providing fast and deep insight into massive datasets that informed outbreak response and resource allocation decisions. The Governor credited the solution with enabling strategic vaccine clinic planning, community outreach, and other critical public health initiatives that managed COVID-19 response across the state.
